David Friddle: New Victory
Asheville, NC, June 2018
In 1997 I returned to Asheville, NC—where I had lived from 1991–92. I had only a few months earlier managed the SC Gay Pride March in my hometown of Greenville; the publisher Roger Bourland had dared me to found a gay men's choir in South Carolina; to my, and many others, Upstate Singers Allied was born. When I moved back to Asheville, I had no intention of starting another choir; however, my friend Will Jones proved to be quite persuasive, which resulted in Cantarìa. I left Asheville the following year to return to New York City to be Director of Music at Central Presbyterian Church. The guys in South Carolina weren't able to keep Upstate Singers Allied going after my departure; the singers in Cantarìa, however, kept it going—even to 20 years, at which concert I was honored to be invited to conduct my own composition, New Victory, as the first piece on the program.
